With eyes peeled for anything weird coming out of Kazakhstan to proof Sacha Baron Cohen’s rather brutal take on the Central Asian country, it was only a matter of time before this would happen. Under the heading “Is Borat right about Kazakhstan? Now they have mis-spelt their banknotes”, the Evening Standard marks the way ahead.

Any story from Kazakhstan - good or bad, sad or funny, hilarious or tragic - will now have to be tested against the Borat hypothesis. The global entertainment press has subscribed to the Kazakhstan Google Alert and eagerly waits for news from the grossly-ridiculed, unspellable country somewhere in the void of the former Soviet Union.

So, what about this story, that’s worth drawing the line as well: Reuters’ correspondent Michael Steen is at his best when he writes about Kazakh food (”In Kazakhstan, the hungry do eat a horse”). Is he jumping on the bandwagon there?

At a wedding it will often join koybas, a boiled sheep’s head, as one of the delicacies on the menu.

Serving koybas is itself a ritual. The host cuts the head into slices and serves different pieces according to the status of each guest. Brain is said to be the best and would go to the most honored diner. Other parts are less sought-after.

Kumys and kurt smell like a farmyard doused in manure, at least to my untutored nose.

The show goes on. Reuters writes an article about all films that would be considered for Oscar nominations. Kazakhstan deserves to be in the headline: “Borat’s homeland gets good news from Oscar”.

“As Kazakhstan braces itself for the November 3 release of the comedy “Borat” — which pokes merciless fun at the central Asian nation — Hollywood delivered some good news Thursday.

For the first time, Kazakhstan will vie for one of the five slots in the foreign-language Oscar category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said.”
