I can't compare to other countries, but in general Kazahstan has decent infrastructure but not outstanding access everywhere--even in Astana Internet is expensive and spotty. But Kazakhstan is also pretty open in terms of free speech and also very open to Western innovations and technology. I'd think those are the main reasons why KZ is leading the blog revolution!

Lighten up! Sure it's difficult, but for the sake of your readers, stop complaining! I kept hoping that somehow, in the pages, the author would reveal he was just kidding, that he hadn't behaved this way abroad, and would reveal the book was actually a parody of the obnoxious American tourist. The whole country is crap, and the USA is WAY better, in case you didn't know, duh. And then he has the nerve to write a book, calling HIMSELF in the title, a "Turkmen Cowboy". Tribal Nation: The Making of Soviet Turkmenistan Amazon Price: $19.95 This book was decent for what it was. The author explores how the Soviets created Turkmenistan back in the 1920s and 1930s, and she did a great deal of research and used many good sources. However, I was hoping for more. She basically talks about this creation occuring in the 1920s and 1930s throughout the entirety of a not-very-lengthy book, and then has one 5 page chapter where she suddenly fast-forwards up to present day. I found this very disappointing, since it would've been interesting to know what happened between then and now, especially considering the fact that a second world war occurred, the cold war occured, and the USSR collapsed between then and now. I would imagine at least some of that had an effect on the creation and continued building of Turkmenistan as a country. Energy and Conflict in Central Asia and the Caucasus Amazon Price: $34.76 For those who want to understand why Central Asia has been fought over in recent history Rajan Menon provides an invaluable tool. This book goes region by region utilizing the best authors in each. The book covers the individual countries in the Caspian regions as well as the future prospects for Russian and OPEC interaction there. It clearly lays out how the region has been developing and although a little dated at this point it still provides an excellent foundation. The authors that contribute are the best in their fields and Menon organizes the book very well. Highly recommend if you are interested in oil policy. The Ends of the Earth: From Togo to Turkmenistan, from Iran to Cambodia, a Journey to the Frontiers of Anarchy Amazon Price: $10.88 First a few criticisms: Kaplan covers a monster amount of ground in this book without developing a cohesive narrative element. For instance a journey along the Silk Road would have an obvious narrative element. He could have developed even a contrived means of guiding the reader along. Perhaps he could have matched the footsteps of Alexander the Great, or used geology or some common element to give continutuity and guidance to the reader. Some might argue he uses the common travails of the developing world to link his travels but instead he spent most of his time explaining how Iran wasn't Turkey for example. I think this lack of cohesion can confuse the reader. But ultimately, Kaplan is not for light reading. He is not intent on amusing. And he is very interested in giving the reader the unvarnished world as he sees it. So while I criticize Kaplan for not being Thoreaux of some other great travel writer it may also be his greatest strength. Kaplan is his own State Department, CIA and Assocaited Press. He gives background derived from copious research. He offers experiential comparisons. He draws on local sources. All balanced with what can almost be called objectivity. At times, Kaplans near love fest with Iran annoyed. But it is hard to fault someone with experience well beyond that of any diplomat or common reporter. All in all, this is not his best book but still extremely enjoyable and worth reading. Turkmenistan: History, Geography, Government, and Culture ...
