Kazakhstan.Net Domain Sold
Web-domains with geographical names are always a subject of interest on the Internet market. Average prices for them yield only to the domains of business and porn topics.
Domain-Blog reports that the specialized fair of geographic domains names was held by the Associated Cities Co. in San-Francisco in mid-November this year. One of the lots was the name of the second largest post-Soviet country in the second most popular zone .NET.
The domain Kazakhstan.net was sold for $15,000. Although it is not a high enough price, but on the other hand, it is a very good investment for the buyer.

Given the relatively low penetration of Internet access in RK and the fact that beyond oil, backpacking and Borat references, Kazakhstan is somewhat of a niche interest, $15k for a .net domain seems a bit steep to me. I’d wager it was either purchased by or for the benefit of a major Kazakh telco (national operator or other) or as a vanity domain.

Nothing there yet but a cool globe favicon. Already 2 months and no action, not even a coming soon banner. Maybe they hope the Kazakhstan government will buy them out, or maybe the gov’t bought it to keep it from the hands of Borat-lovers or other detractors.
