Rakhat Aliyev, former boss of special services, former diplomat, former media tycoon, and more notably — former presidential son-in-law, was accused of heading a mafia-type gang last year. The investigation and trial revealed his implication in the abduction of two men and subsequent forcible raidership of assets from a number of people and firms. Although the defendant himself is still staying in Vienna and the the two kidnapped ex-managers of Nurbank (which used to be controlled by Aliyev) are still missing — a year after they had disappeared — the court yesterday sentenced the odious man to 20 years in jail. Another court — this time it will be held behind closed doors — will start soon in Astana, accusing Aliyev of ilegal access to state secrets, following revelation of the top officials’ wiretapped telephone conversations by the ex-diplomat. Another trial should follow is and when the two missing men’s bodies will be possibly found. Interestingly, although the court ruled that Aliyev’s property should be confiscated, it is an open secret that his former wife, president’s elder daughter Dariga Nazarbayeva, has been actively re-registering ex-husband’s assets for her own and their elder son’s names.
