Kazakh police wants cooperation with church

Ministry of Interior has put forward an initiative to involve Islam and Orthodox Christian church representatives in crime prevention activities, elucidation of the population and formation of the healthy life-style patterns. In result of a special meeting, the agreement between the ministry and two major confessions of Kazakhstan was signed.

As reported, the parties agreed to work with the convicts (however, the correctional facilities are subordinate to the Ministry of Justice, and the role of Interior Ministry in this view is not clear), drug and alcohol addicts, setup of the telephone helplines and - notably - work with the policemen to prevent roughness and harshness towards the suspects.

On the one hand, this step has formalized the already existing practices of the religion workers - HIV/AIDS prevention, social rehabilitation of the prisoners etc. On the other hand, it is quite indicative that the secular state’s official bodies seek professional contacts with only two confessions - two out of dozens of officially registered, legally operating and, apparently, having their flock too.
