Commenters at the Olympiad

[info]slavasay writes [ru] about an unpleasant story, related to unethical comments in the Internet-broadcast of the Russian “Sport” TV channel:

Russian channel “Sport” organized a broadcast over the Internet. That’s cool — but they sometimes broadcast a technical part, the one that is not aired on the television. Commenters chat with each other and the editors. The raw kitchen of the TV, damnit.

Today there was a technical part about rhythmic gymnastics. They — Lidya Ivanova and Nickolai Popov — spoke about our Aliya Yussupova. The thought nobody can hear them, but it’s well audible in the Internet.

N.P.: Look at this Yussupova. What has she got, except her round mug?
L.I.: I’d ban shortish girls from rhythmic gymnastics. Half-meter legs and watermelon-shaped head — nothing to look at.

That’s decent. They speak even worse about other sportswomen.

Let me remind that they spoke about Aliya Yussupova, 24, one of the best, cutest and tallest rhytmic gymnasts of the world (height 175 cm, weight 45 kg). She got her first medal at the World Cup in September 2001 in Berlin. The Asian Olympics 2002 brought her silver. September 2003, Aliya wins gold on the World Cup, in addition to 5 silver medals. In 2006, on the Asian champonship in India, Aliya won 6 gold medals. Here’s her profile on the International Federation of rhythmic gymnastics.

Russian commentators are unbelievable. It was serious culture shock for me to listen to them during this Olympic Games. Besides unnecessary and rude comments about what athletes look like, they also ignore the main action to talk about whichever Russian sportsman is competing: “And someone won, but look how well Arkady Vyatchin is doing coming in at 6th place. Wonderful form!”

And they root against teams, even when Russia or CIS countries aren’t playing. Journalists should not have favorites but they say thing like, “Ok and let’s root for Sweden, let’s hope that Australia loses!” Ridiculous!

Those comments come off as racist to me, seeing as how nonsensical and cruel they are. Half-meter legs? Watermelon head? I don’t see what they are talking about, unless it’s some Neanderthal image they have in their head of all Central Asians…

Disgraceful, but par for the course for Russia these days.
